Psalm 33
18-19 Watch this: God’s eye is on those who respect him,
the ones who are looking for his love.
He’s ready to come to their rescue in bad times;
in lean times he keeps body and soul together.
20-22 We’re depending on God;
he’s everything we need.
What’s more, our hearts brim with joy
since we’ve taken for our own his holy name.
Love us, God, with all you’ve got—
that’s what we’re depending on. – MSG
“The person who hears the Psalms as they sing them is deeply moved and changed by their words. They become a mirror where you see your soul. Whatever causes us grief is healed when we sing Psalms, and whatever causes us stumbling will be discovered. It’s like the Psalms were written by you yourself. They become your own songs.” – Desert Elder Athanasius (c. 300–373)
Reflection:
We invite you to read through this Psalm and quote. While we generally don’t sing the Psalms very much now, we invite you to find an instrumental song and play it in the background while you read through the Psalm a few times slowly. Perhaps you find an inspiration in the music to sing the Psalm. Or maybe you take a moment to write the thought of the Psalm in your own words. Hold all in gratitude with God.
